Rent Gästehaus Eltz for your holiday in Altaussee — three bedrooms, two fireplaces, one baby grand. Swiss stone pine, marble kitchen, and views of the Loser, Sarstein and Dachstein peaks. For up to six guests.
Close to the lake, close to the village — and still, the quiet. At Gästehaus Eltz, everything a stay in Altaussee can be is gathered under one roof.
Newly built, yet inside it carries the handwriting of an entire life: old paintings beside Swiss stone pine beds, a 1930 baby grand beside a Thermomix, a green tiled stove beside the induction hob. Three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom; two living rooms with fireplaces; a dining table for fourteen. Six guests sleep in comfort — there is always room for friends in the evening.
The house stands in Puchen, on the southern edge of Altaussee. A few minutes on foot along the river Traun bring you to the lake. The village centre is close, but beyond the garden gate there is silence.
Lake Altaussee is only a few minutes' walk along the Traun. But at home in Gästehaus Eltz, the panorama already begins at the breakfast table — and ends only when the last light leaves the peaks.
Loser and Schönberg catch the morning light; Trisselwand and Tressenstein hold the noon; Hochanger and Sandling carry the afternoon blue; Dachstein and Plattenkogel turn red at dusk. Eight summits to keep you company through the day — and no two windows that show the same.
Fresh pastries from the village bakery, homemade jams, mountain cheese and butter from the region, eggs from the farm next door — delivered daily and discreetly to your front door.
So begins a morning, the way a beautiful morning ought to begin: no breakfast room, no opening hours, no strangers at the next table. You set the table when you wish, eat as long as you wish — at the long dining table with the Loser in view, on the terrace with its magnificent mountain panorama, or in your dressing gown by the tiled stove if the mood takes you.
Every room tells its own story. Click through — from the marble kitchen and the four-poster beds to the parlour with the 1930 Duysen grand piano.
No compromises, no surprises. A house that works because someone has thought about every detail.
The house can be many things. Not because it is generic — but because it adapts itself anew to every visit. Eight invitations, all of them sincere.
A village at 712 metres, set between the Trisselwand and the Loser. A lake of drinking-water clarity. A tradition of summer retreat that began with Hofmannsthal and Schnitzler — and has not stopped since.
We describe here only what we love ourselves.
Lake Altaussee covers 2.1 km² and reaches a depth of 53 metres. It is so pure it has the quality of drinking water. Only electric and rowing boats are allowed. The lake-loop path is 7.5 km, almost flat, walkable in roughly an hour and a half — all year round. In high summer the water rarely climbs above 20 °C, but when it does, the swim is a blessing. Local speciality: Ausseer Arctic char, freshly smoked at the farm.
The Loser (1,838 m) is local mountain, ski area and panoramic road in one: 10 kilometres of toll road and 29 hairpin bends climb to almost 1,600 m, where the icy Augstsee and a herd of Highland cattle await. In winter, 34 kilometres of pistes, free-ride terrain, family-friendly without the queues. Alongside: cross-country trails, snowshoe routes to the Blaa-Alm, a natural toboggan run, ice skating. Summer classics: the Six-Lakes hike on the Tauplitzalm and the Tressenstein, with views over three lakes.
In the Salzwelten Altaussee salt mine, more than 6,500 works of art were hidden during the Second World War — among them the Ghent Altarpiece and Vermeer's "The Art of Painting". George Clooney's Monuments Men told the story in 2014. The Altaussee Literature Museum honours Hofmannsthal, Bahr, Torberg, Frischmuth and the long tradition of the alpine summer. The Ausseer Carnival, with its Trommelweiber drumming women and sequined Flinserl figures, is UNESCO intangible heritage. And the Daffodil Festival in late May is the largest flower festival in Austria.
The Ausseerland takes its food seriously. At Hotel Seevilla you dine refined and regional, with a view across the lake; the Hubertushof is the address for game. Up the mountain, the Loseralm-Hütte serves a hearty plank platter, and the Kohlröserlhütte is a classic walker's stop. Next door in Bad Aussee, the Lewandofsky patisserie offers Ausseer gingerbread, and Café Temmel its share of cake. Smoked char is bought directly from Fischerei Hauptmann.
Bad Aussee (4 km) is considered the geographical centre of Austria — traditional dress shops and spa house included. Grundlsee (6 km) is the "Styrian Sea", with the legendary Toplitzsee. Hallstatt (30 min) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Bad Ischl (40 min) holds the imperial villa and the Zauner patisserie. The Gosausee, with the Dachstein mirrored on its surface, is a comfortable hour away. The Dachstein Ice Cave and the 5fingers viewing platform lie 40 minutes off.
There is no bad month here. January has deep snow; in February the Trommelweiber take to the streets; April brings sunshine for ski touring; May blooms with daffodils. July and August are high summer at the lake. September: deer rut on the Loser, larches turning gold. October: the cattle return from the alps, game weeks in the kitchens. December: the Twelve Holy Nights and mountain Advent.
Altaussee lies in the heart of the Salzkammergut — easy to reach, far enough away from the everyday. The address: Puchen 184, 8992 Altaussee, on the southern edge of the village.
Four free parking spaces directly in front of the house. We are happy to arrange transfer from Bad Aussee station.
