Arrival

A house that welcomes you like an old friend.

Close to the lake, close to the village — and still, the quiet. At Gästehaus Eltz, everything a stay in Altaussee can be is gathered under one roof.

Newly built, yet inside it carries the handwriting of an entire life: old paintings beside Swiss stone pine beds, a 1930 baby grand beside a Thermomix, a green tiled stove beside the induction hob. Three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom; two living rooms with fireplaces; a dining table for fourteen. Six guests sleep in comfort — there is always room for friends in the evening.

The house stands in Puchen, on the southern edge of Altaussee. A few minutes on foot along the river Traun bring you to the lake. The village centre is close, but beyond the garden gate there is silence.

Views · Mountain Panorama

From every window, a painting of its own.

Lake Altaussee is only a few minutes' walk along the Traun. But at home in Gästehaus Eltz, the panorama already begins at the breakfast table — and ends only when the last light leaves the peaks.

Loser and Schönberg catch the morning light; Trisselwand and Tressenstein hold the noon; Hochanger and Sandling carry the afternoon blue; Dachstein and Plattenkogel turn red at dusk. Eight summits to keep you company through the day — and no two windows that show the same.

Mornings · Breakfast basket

A breakfast basket that knocks quietly at your door.

Every morning a lovingly packed breakfast basket is waiting for you — fresh, regional and included in the price.

The house takes care of the rest: a fully equipped kitchen with coffee machine and Quooker, beautiful china for a large table, a breakfast table of its own for eight. So begins a morning, the way a beautiful morning ought to begin — no breakfast room, no opening hours, no strangers at the next table. You set the table when you wish, eat as long as you wish: at the long dining table with the Loser in view, on the terrace with its magnificent mountain panorama, or in your dressing gown by the tiled stove if the mood takes you.

Sleeping · Swiss Stone Pine

The Zirbe room — and the same quiet promise in every bed.

At Gästehaus Eltz there is one room built entirely of Swiss stone pine – and three bedrooms in which, without exception, stand stone pine beds. This is no accident, but old Aussee wisdom.

Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) grows only in the high Alps, slowly and densely. Its wood carries those dark knots that make every board unmistakable, and a resinous, warm scent that does not fade for decades. In the Zirbe room everything is made of it: panelling, wardrobe, bedstead – a room that falls quieter the moment you step in.

Researchers at Joanneum Research and the Human Research Institute had people sleep in stone pine and in conventional beds – and measured a clear difference: a calmer heart rate that saves the heart around 3,500 beats a day, an easier circulation and blood pressure, deeper sleep, faster recovery and a more composed nervous system that barely reacts to föhn winds and changing weather.

You notice none of it – except in the morning. Then there is that rare clarity and well-being in the air, the very reason people once travelled to the Aussee for their summer retreat.
